Schema therapy is an integrative approach with a strong relational emphasis. A schema is a pattern of thought and/or behaviour. In schema therapy, a schema is considered to be an early maladaptive coping mechanism, typically developed from an unmet need in childhood. An early maladaptive schema may present in the form of emotional memories or even physical sensation. This therapy aims to help clients find ways to ensure their emotional need are met in a healthy way that do not cause distress.
