When it comes to supporting children with behavioural or emotional challenges, caregiver
involvement is not just helpful— it’s integral to fostering meaningful and lasting change.
While psychologists provide structured intervention and insight, it’s parents and caregivers
who spend the most time with the child, manage their environments, and encounter daily
teaching moments.
Positive Behaviour Management (PBM) is most effective when parents understand why
certain behaviours happen. A child refusing to go down a slide, for example, might be
anxious, unskilled, tired, or unsure—each requiring a different response. Rather than relying
on generic strategies which may not be effective, or are hit-or-miss affairs, we work with
caregivers to use evidence-based approaches to interpret behaviours and respond with
appropriate, individualized plans and strategies.
Behaviour change is a process. It takes time, patience, effort and consistency. We support
caregivers to gradually build skills in identifying behaviour patterns, understanding their
functions, and using practical tools to shape more adaptive responses. Plans are tailored,
focused on one area at a time to avoid overwhelm, and designed to bring about deeper,
longer-term changes—beyond just short-term fixes.
Ultimately, our goal is to equip caregivers to manage and support their child independently
over time. Through collaboration, we foster real change that extends beyond the clinic and
into everyday life.
