Jacqueline is a psychologist who specialises in working on challenging behaviour of intellectually disabled individuals across all ages. Her deep understanding of the comorbidities of medical conditions and flexibility around each family’s circumstances allow her to offer practical insights and interventions. Her journey began as a relief teacher in one of the special schools, in which she discovered a vocation for working with children with special needs. Leaving behind a banking career, she then pursued studies in Psychology before returning as a School Psychologist.
Jacqueline spent more than 8 years supporting students with challenging behavioural concerns. Her methodology emphasises mentoring parents and school/support staff on effective support strategies and communication/boundaries. She also educates the more senior children on appropriate social, emotional and safety skills. This multi-pronged approach, and the skill set required to strategically manage the children, stem from her training in various frameworks such as Behaviour Modification, Positive Behaviour Support and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy(CBT), as well as the Stepping Stones Triple P intervention programme (with REACH Psychologist) for parents of children with disabilities.
That there is always a reason behind every action, positive or negative, is one of the most cherished lessons Jacqueline has learnt from her students. In order to rationalise with the children who struggle with expressing themselves properly, she has adopted an attitude of utmost patience and understanding, and with this, it is a matter of time that full collaboration can be achieved and improvements to quality of life can be made for the children and caregivers alike.
Jacqueline thereafter entered the mental healthcare sector to support adults with neuro-developmental disorders, working with the Institute of Mental Health’s(IMH) Adult Neurodevelopmental Service(ANDS), a 7 year commitment. During this time, she worked with adults with challenging behaviours of concern as well as consulting caregivers in various inpatient and outpatient settings such as clinics, homes, and DAC/residential settings.
Jacqueline is adept at developing practical evidence-based intervention models to improve patient care and drive positive clinical outcomes. She has developed an experiential training module for support staff while adopting a hands-on approach for referral cases so as to practically support ground staff as they work on the behaviours of concern. Currently, she provides consultant services to schools and agencies that serve children with intellectual disabilities, coaching and mentoring their staff with her invaluable experience.
